See MoreBack in September, staff member Kayla met up with Grade 8/9 students from J.V Humphries School in Kaslo to discuss water quality monitoring using the CABIN (Canadian Aquatic Biomonitoirng Inventory Network) protocol.
The students had an opportunity to observe and partake in collecting benthic macroinvertebrates and testing water quality parameters using various hand-held equipment. They observed the bugs under magnifiers and tried to identify them. The students learned about how water bugs can help us determine the quality of water within a stream. They also learned about the Kaslo River watershed and various disturbance regimes impacting it, and the many things that can degrade water quality.
