Columbia River Operations Summary

BC Hydro recently came out with their Fall 2021 Columbia River Operations Summary which provides a great overview of their activity along the river and the various changes in water levels throughout the different reservoirs.

This is a great resource to check out if you are interested in learning more about BC Hydro and their dams, how changes in the environment impact their operations, and the various treaties between Canada and the United States.

Empowering Youth to Protect Local Watersheds

Our Lake Education Program aims to empower and inspire younger generations to care about local watersheds and learn why protecting them are so important.

Back in September, staff member Kayla met up with Grade 8/9 students from J.V Humphries School in Kaslo to discuss water quality monitoring using the CABIN (Canadian Aquatic Biomonitoirng Inventory Network) protocol.

The students had an opportunity to observe and partake in collecting benthic macroinvertebrates and testing water quality parameters using various hand-held equipment. They observed the bugs under magnifiers and tried to identify them. The students learned about how water bugs can help us determine the quality of water within a stream. They also learned about the Kaslo River watershed and various disturbance regimes impacting it, and the many things that can degrade water quality.
